No more discussions: Iceland withdraw their application for accessing the EU!
What will be the consequences for those Icelandic Citizen who live and work in other EU Countries?
Last week, Iceland suspended its application to join the EU and now counts on the EEA as well as on Schengen Treaty.
By withdrawing their application to join the EU, in fact nothing will change for those Icelandic citizen who live all over Europe. They won’t need any Residence or Work Permit. Due to the Schengen Treaty they are allowed to move within the Schengen countries where ever they want. One has to obey the local registration and residence law.
EU citizens who want to move to Austria, for example, will have to apply for EU Registration at the local authorities. In Germany this law was abolished years ago, already.

Was bedeutet das für jene Isländer die im EU-Raum leben und arbeiten?
Die Regierung in Reykjavik hat letzte Woche bekannt gegeben, dass sie keine Fortsetzung der EU-Beitrittsgespräche plant. Man setzt nun voll auf die Mitgliedschaft im Europäischen Wirtschaftsraum EWR und das Schengen-Abkommen.
Mit dem Rückzug des EU-Beitrittsgesuches ändert sich de-facto also nichts am Aufenthaltsstatus der Isländer im EU-Raum. Als Schengen-Mitglied haben sie die volle Freizügigkeit bei der Wahl ihres Wohnsitzes innerhalb der EU, mit den jeweiligen lokalen Landesgesetzen. Was bedeutet, dass sich ein Isländer der sich z.b. in Österreich niederlässt, wie bisher bei der zuständigen Einwanderungsbehörde eine EU-Freizügigkeitsbescheinigung beantragen muss. Für Deutschland wurde dieses Gesetz übrigens bereits vor Jahren im Rahmen eines EU-Erlasses aus Brüssel abgeschafft.
