Every beginning of a year the Austrian Ministry of Finance call their citizen to file their tax declaration.
Austria has a progressive taxation system under which individuals are taxed on their income at rates between 0% and 50%.
All foreign nationals working in Austria for more than six months are defined as normally resident in Austria and liable for taxation there on all their income from Austrian and foreign sources. However, Austria has double taxation agreements with many other countries, under which tax paid in one country can be offset against any tax payable in the other.
Foreign nationals working in Austria that are not defined as normally resident there may be subject to limited tax liability.
Tax and social security contributions are deducted direct from employee’s incomes. There are various tax free allowances for eligible individuals, e.g. married couples. Taxes are paid in advance and liability is adjusted on submission of an annual tax return. Tax returns can be submitted electronically using the Finanz Online service on the Federal Ministry of Finance website. The Austrian tax year corresponds to a calendar year.
Austria also has a range of other taxes including inheritance tax, church tax, purchase tax on housing, motor vehicle tax, corporation tax and VAT.
If you do not want to pay for the service of a tax advisor or Relocation Service to support you with this, you can do it yourself as well.
